Today I want to write a bit about my core values. The Social Fairy stands for integrity and professionalism. Sure enough I have more than these two values guiding me but these are the most important ones, for me at least, in my work.
Now, what does this mean?
Simply put it means I never make a promise I cannot keep! I will always do what is best for my client, even at the cost of earning less or, in some cases, giving up a project altogether. Why? because I am a professional. I know my abilities and my skills well and I know there are still things I don’t know. When a client approaches me I will review and analyze the client’s online presence, I will put up a strategy for improving that presence, strengthening the brand and promote the business. I will not sell anyone a service I cannot provide well, I will never promise results such as “you’ll definitely be on Google’s first page within 2 days” (heck if I knew how to crack Googl’e algorithm I would be a gazillionnaire!), I will not sell a service I don’t know how to provide at all (e.g selling web design services when I have no clue about web UI and UX like some recent examples I have seen), I will always refer the client to other specialists in their field for services needed, or I will work in cooperation with such specialists to provide the best and most comprehensive service.
Sadly, I am seeing more and more service providers, especially in the social media and web services fields (web development, web design, graphic design and SEO) offering services they clearly cannot provide (judging from their own websites, designs and online presence) and offering them at dirt cheap prices to attract gullible clients. These will be most appealing to small businesses, to new businesses which are still low on funds, or to businesses owned and run by old school craft masters, you know the kind of people who can build you a custom made, work of art, cabinet but who do not even have an email address…. good people, talented people who only want to make a decent living and are tempted by cheap prices and the promises of instant success (because they don’t understand the medium at all).
The way I see it, I have only 2 options in business: to learn everything I can about anything I need to do/know for my clients, or give up a piece of the pie and share with other professionals to provide the best, most professional and comprehensive service I can.
Integrity and Professionalism. Let these be your guiding light in business and you’ll have earned my respect and, I assure you, your clients’ respect as well.
